How to clean up voice memo audio on iPhone

Updated by Winton Gee

Quick answer

In Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap the More button, then turn on Enhance Recording to reduce background noise and echo when you play it. Apple notes that playback options do not change the recording itself. To get a cleaned copy of the memo as a file, share it to Files and run it through a noise removal app.

Lectures, interviews and voice notes recorded in a busy room come out with fan noise, chatter and echo. Voice Memos can reduce some of it while you listen, and you can stop most of it next time. These steps are written for iOS 26.

Listen with less noise: Enhance Recording

  1. Go to the Voice Memos app on your iPhone.
  2. In the list of recordings, tap the recording, then tap the More button.
  3. Tap Options, then turn on Enhance Recording.
  4. Play the recording.

Apple describes Enhance Recording as reducing background noise and echo when you play Mono and Stereo recordings. Spatial Audio recordings on supported iPhones also offer Studio Voice in the same place. Apple also notes that these playback options do not affect the recording itself: they apply when you play the memo in Voice Memos.

Enhance Recording works on voice memos only. It does not reach a lecture recorded in another app, an audio file someone sent you or the sound of a video.

Get a clean copy you can send

To make a cleaned file you can share or keep, move the memo to Files, then clean it in an app:

  1. In Voice Memos, tap the recording, then tap the More Actions button.
  2. Tap Share. Under Options, Apple offers Rendered, a single m4a file, or Editable, which keeps layers.
  3. Tap Save to Files and choose a folder.
  4. Open the noise removal app, choose the file from Files, listen to the result and save the clean copy.

Next time: filter noise while you record

On iOS 26, Voice Memos can record with Voice Isolation, which Apple says prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient noise:

  1. Open Voice Memos.
  2. Open Control Center, then tap Voice Memos at the top.
  3. Select Voice Isolation.

For a lecture or a meeting, also put the iPhone as close to the speaker as you can. No setting brings back a voice that is too far from the microphone.

Where Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner helps

Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner opens voice memos, including layered ones, and audio files in m4a, mp3, wav, aac, caf and aiff. It removes fans, traffic, chatter and room noise on the iPhone itself and keeps the voice. Play the whole memo clean before you pay, then save a clean m4a copy to Files. The original stays as it is.

It keeps speech and removes everything else, music included. Previews are free at any length, and the first 30 seconds of every save are free.

Noise Remover & Voice Cleaner is coming soon to the App Store.
